      Most university archives will have loads of these already and if you brought this stuff to mine I'd very politely suggest putting them on eBay. Good luck!

        I wonder if my uncle & aunt saved them because they hoped the collection would be valuable, or just out of interest. Wish I could ask them before deciding what to do.

          Probably both...

          The thin paper covers on those old LIFE mags do not hold up well over time and the areas around the staples will be very weak. Be careful while you're handling them; speaking from experience, it's very easy to accidentally rip a cover off.
