Normally I read the fedi and look for any stories people are talking about, then search YouTube to find news clips to listen to while I do things around the house. In the past month a new (for me) source has popped up: "Breaking Points" it features Krystal Ball who I think was a Bernie person? Saagar Enjeti I know less about.

They call themselves "a fearless anti-establishment podcast"

I'm curious about their funding and political angle.

They are talking about many stories that I've been following carefully: Epstein, the "big beautiful bill" ... etc.

But every now and then they will say something that gives me pause.

And they do some good coverage on Israel but can be a little sloppy in how they speak about the subject. Sloppy in the way that could pull the wrong audience, does that make sense?

The polished production (the set the editing etc.) makes this stand out more.

I guess I'm wondering if anyone has been following them since before they blew up (and they are blowing up, coming up in every search)... I'm not saying they are good or bad, I just don't know what their perspective is, and what audience or funding is supporting that perspective.

I like to know that with anything that I listen to.

Did I answer this question? I was a little uncertain of what you were asking.

@futurebird Krystal Ball is married to Kyle Kulinski, who's pretty progressive. Ball ran as a Democrat for Congress back in 2010.

Enjeti was the Daily Caller's White House correspondent.

@futurebird They used to have a show called Rising on The Hill newspaper youtube channel during the 2020 election time.

Saagar is your typical fox news conservative, worked for the Daily Caller (Tucker Carlson's rag). And the Hudson Institute right wing think tank.

Krystal is a former MSNBC show co-host and loser dem candidate for the House, was a Bernie person, originally seemed ok, but can be taken by conspiracy thinking. Her dislike of Hillary was the beginning of her anti-establishment dialog. She ended up dating and marrying another political youtuber Kyle Kulinski.

I've never watched their new incarnation of Rising, because I absolutely can't tolerate Saagar boot licking and excuse making for his help in creating the hellscape we have today.

                    @pauliehedron

Saagar is trying hard to seem progressive but little things he says give him away.

Kyle Kulinski has always seemed like a perfectly good person to me however.

I don't know if putting a leftist who can be taken by conspiracies with a "former conservative" to do a show is a good idea.

Who is going to be the anchor to reality in that situation?

Well they are expanding their audience into the left and liberals and people get attached to personalities... then all of a sudden those personalities can turn around and push some real nonsense.

I am suspicious that this is what could happen with "Breaking Points" although my evidence of this is very subjective right now.

@futurebird It definitely does. I used to work for the show it was born out, Rising, until I realized that Krystal was getting too comfortable with reactionary viewpoints.

Fascists hate capitalism, but their reasons for it are deeply disturbing and damaging to society. They must not be allied with.

This is a good sign really, the fedi has slowly begun to have some of the good functions that twitter used to have. It's growing to be a place of human intelligence where you can ask questions and have discussions with a wide range of people who really know their subject.

Twitter used to be like that... but also a cesspit. Now we have some of that back, but the conversations are better even if the breadth of topics isn't there yet.

I hope we can keep growing in this way.

"Human Intelligence" is what LLMs "AI" are trying to simulate and replace. Because people have a need for it.

Reddit, Twitter, and long ago the usenet could do this kind of thing.

But, I would never trust an LLM with a question like this one. I'm concerned that since corporate social media is broken many people are turning to LLMs.

It would be very easy to push propaganda and steer public opinion through an LLM, and that is what people like Musk say they want to do.
