        @aburka

In the context of "republicans" and US pol "AOC" would mean Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to most people. She is a left leaning Democrat that makes many republicans angry.

But it could also stand for "Age of Consent" (which some right wingers do complain about if you catch them off guard.)

Knowing that acronym either means you have been exposed to creeps online... or are one.

So not recognizing it is good IMO. They are out here writing essays about it.

@futurebird you "joke", but I have long wondered why Democrats are always playing the defense on e.g. Trans Rights when they should be playing the offense on Underage Child Marriage. Republicans should be constantly forced to talk about why they continue to defend it.

@futurebird *sigh* everything involving choice is inimical to them. And they hate axioms generally.

There are some "Dark Intellectuals" or whatever they called themselves who have sat around trying to make the case that placing the emphasis on CONSENT in sex ed is a sinister left wing plot to destroy the family.

Because it might make the youth "too self-centered."

You know what? It *is* a plot. It's a plot to make every child confident enough, brave enough to know when they are being exploited and reach out for help and make noise.

I know you are familiar with this Llewelly, but I want to explain what I mean by "emphasis on CONSENT in sex ed" (you are not the only one who will read this)

Sex ed is a big topic that adults don't like to discuss because it's embarrassing. Hearing an adult say "No one should ever touch your body if you don't want them to. Even if you at first said yes, but change your mind they must stop. Right away."

                      Can make a huge difference.

I've always been glad that I heard adults explain that to me because what I picked up from movies and culture was not as clear.

If you asked teen me before sex ed if it was reasonable to say "no stop" and expect it to work I might have not known the answer. And why would a 13 year old know?

Hearing our phys ed teacher struggle to explain that to us, meant it was important and real.

Young people who do not hear this are more vulnerable.

My parents were too embarrassed by the topic to try. And they thought I was too innocent to need such information.

But at age 16 some boy tried to pull "but baby you already got me going you have to finish it" on me.

And I had the confidence to just walk out because I knew he was full of BS. Wouldn't ANY parent want their kid to be able to do that?

Or do we want to pretend they will never need to?

@futurebird @llewelly I was a young adult in the 90s and I was astonished how much push back there was against the idea of consent, of openly discussing boundaries. Camille Paglia and Naomi Wolff and other pundits complaining how it spoiled the sacred mystery. Sit-coms playing it as a way to mock literal-minded nerds and over-earnest college students.
