Starting to think everyone should have to use public defenders. And cases should be done with pseudonyms and transcripts where possible.
The jury could read the account from the prosecutor and defendant and submit more written questions.
Everyone gets randomly selected representation.
(Probably unworkable but did you know some people will pick a lawyer because they know the prosecutor socially? You can pay more for that.)

This is not a good time or place for my personal tolerance for "this is just how the world works" BS to suddenly fall to absolute zero but here we are.

@futurebird that actually does sound like a good, if somewhat utopian idea.
I just think that it would get corrupted quickly anyway, but the system is corrupted now so...

@futurebird I do like the idea of everybody using public defenders, but not sure about just transcripts. So much nuance is lost with just the written word, and there are several defendants I can think of who testified themselves into prison, because their demeanor belied the words they spoke. Granted, these were white people, so they get all the benefits non-white people don’t always have in the whole process.

@futurebird Here in MA they have fewer PDs and fill the roster with private attorneys but have not been keeping the pay rates consistent, so the lawyers went on strike recently to get better pay. Between all the gambling and cannabis tax income, we should be able to cover this easily. I think in general it’s a neat idea. But if I am ever in legal trouble, I would want Ann Taylor (Kohberger’s lawyer who is a PD) on my side. She’s one of the best I’ve seen in pretrial work.

I recall reading a study that presented ‘juries’ with audio-video testimony, just audio, just transcript, and then transcript converted to standardized english (removing colloquialisms, dialect, gender markers, etc). At each step the juries did better at reaching the ‘proper’ verdict.
It seems like (at least in today’s world), removing all the ‘nuance’ people employ in their prejudices far outweighs other nuance they might miss.

I remember a study that showed that people tend to overestimate their ability to detect lies.
In my personal experience people who say they are good at spotting lies can sometimes be some of the worst. (They are very certain that someone is truthful or not... which can kind of shut your ears off.)
