Another meme I enjoyed was that the DM made up that the hither thither staff was magic just so they could cross the bridge and then the party proceeds to break a poorly thought out, unintentionally over powered item.

Absolutely not. I fucking loved this movie. It pivots between things a few times and they're all interesting. It's got humor too. It really captures what a d&d campaign feels like.

    JackbyDevJ JackbyDev
That's still applying video game logic though. Dragons are smart. They wouldn't just endlessly pursue you if they're taking chip damage. They'd fly away. They'd fly towards cities and destroy them to make you stop. The idea one would have contingencies in place isn't unheard of either, they're like evil geniuses.

It's important for others reading this that they realize a *cat* can kill a commoner in one attack. A magic user using magic shouldn't be shocking, even when that magic is flavored as an insult.

Ermmm actually ā˜ļøšŸ¤“ you don't roll when casting Vicious Mockery, the target does, so the best case scenario for the caster would be the target rolling a natural 1.

I can't imagine surviving 55 rounds of combat against a dragon. Are people thinking this is a video game or something where you can just simply not take damage from a dragon if you're skilled enough or something?

This is an absolutely insane take. Vicious Mockery is the the least damaging cantrip (or like bottom three). Further, it's a cantrip, something players are supposed to be able to easily without resource consumption. Expecting a player to come up with unique insults every time they cast this is stupid and exhausting. Also, the reason it's "as effective as power word kill on common folk" is because *common folk are weak and meant to weak*. They're not heroes. Spell casters using cantrips is akin to fighters making normal attacks, swinging a sword.

It's odd saying it does decent damage. It's the least damaging cantrip. Not hating on it, but it's odd to say that lol.

  • Splitting the party from session 1
    JackbyDevJ JackbyDev
I mean, it's good, but it feels like an over reaction. They don't need to make an entirely new character, they just need to think of a reason they'd cooperate. It can be a contrived reason, that's fine, but they need to work together. Some examples, 1. Highly shy character "warms up" to at least one other character and sort of talks to the group "through" that character, but you can still (as a player) face the whole table to talk as a group. 2. Character who is extremely distrusting has met a character before (just tweak backstory) or finds at least one other character implicitly trust worthy. Maybe the Rogue who has been backstabbed too many times trusts the Paladin because they know they're too honest to lie.

THANK. YOU. Players who do this ARE BAD PLAYERS. I don't care what it takes, you WILL find a reason to cooperate. Call it metagaming if you have to. This is a team game, you will work as a team. Players are expected to make characters that will, for whatever reason, will work together and, for whatever reason, will take plot hooks. Without those two things the game doesn't happen.

  • As Primarily a DM.... Yup
    JackbyDevJ JackbyDev
I mean, everything is a *valid* way to play so long as everyone is consenting and enjoying themselves. But I want effort from players. It's shocking to me that as a player other players are often hesitant to want to create backstories with me. It seems most people want their own little unique thing and don't want much interaction. My playgroup (I am a player, no a DM at the moment) has been better about this in our most recent campaign. Three of the characters are siblings (two bird-like creatures and an adopted dragon born with fake wings to fit in). A couple of other players agreed to have little run-ins with my character from before so we knew each other before the start. While an adoring audience is better than a bored one for storytelling, it doesn't help as much as one that participates.

As a DM, this wouldn't necessarily get me excited. It might even make me a little frustrated that you haven't been paying attention. I get the sentiment though, I'm not saying don't do this. For me, what would get me excited is players wanting to take an active role in developing the world *with me.* To me, D&D and any TTRPG is about collaborative story telling. Heavy in the collaborative part. Telling me you want to sort of "take over" making some lore for an area would get me very excited. Telling me you and another player worked together to make your backstories intertwined and woven into a location will get me very excited.

That's because you need to wake up, eye dust! You need to break out of the simulation! It's still 1999 in here! Just kidding lol. But thank you for sharing. I know the feeling you're talking about, just like a tidal wave of nostalgia that is utterly devastating. I can't think of anything off the top of my head that gives me that feeling, but I've felt it.
